About two months ago—in partnership with leading oil house Givaudan—
hosted a first-of-its-kind exhibition celebrating florals in perfumery. Rare is the perfume store that hosts a perfume exhibit, of which nothing is for sale. It was an (iconic) event entirely dedicated to the love of perfume, by and for its deepest admirers.Who better to scent the whole thing than Mr. Flores himself, Rodrigo Flores-Roux (Givaudan VP Perfumer and creator of scents ranging from Clinique Happy, to Tom Ford Neroli Portofino, to Arquiste Tropical). Using seven key flowers (iris, violet, jasmine, rose, ylang-ylang, tuberose, and carnation), Rodrigo crafted his seven dream perfumes around each note— his perfect tuberose, carnation, violet, etc.
As you can expect, all of them were stunners—each singular in style and beautifully faceted, while still retaining a true soliflore feel. Ultimately, Florstalgia showcased Rodrigo’s deep reverence and knowledge of flowers; he has this magical way of revealing raw materials’ most quiet intricacies with ease, elegance, and of course un peu de skank: a green, rooty iris with a humming, velvety, chocolate center; a chalky violet with a Sweet Tart-like play of tang and sweetness…
ANYWAY, I am so excited to finally share the video of the panel I moderated between Rodrigo and
Founders Jake Levy and Matt Belanger. It was an intimate, immersive, and entertaining behind-the-scenes look at the journey and role of florals, from the perfumer’s desk all the way to the store display, through the rarely paired lenses of both perfumer and retailer. And if you’re not caught up on the latest Perfume Room episode, to coincide with the release of this video, Rodrigo came back on the podcast to talk shop about the past, present, and future of perfumery. It was one of my favorite episode of the podcast to date and an incredible inside-look at who dictates industry trends, and how, and why. That full conversation is below:
ENJOY!!!
